BACKFLASHES remastered 2026
BACKFLASHES is a photographic portrait of bombing, made at night between 2003 and 2008 in São Paulo, Santiago, Los Angeles, New York, Naples, Amsterdam, Basel, Mulhouse, Hamburg, Stockholm and the small towns around Heidelberg.
The book first appeared in 2009 with PUBLIKAT and sold 4,500 copies worldwide. The series began with one photograph of a layup in Heidelberg, taken in total darkness on ISO 3200 film with a long handheld exposure on a Leica MP. What followed is a body of work about the act itself: the yards, the tracks, the waiting and the dark, with the writer mostly left out of the frame.
The original edition was printed too dark and carried layout compromises. The 2026 edition returns to the source material with new scans and new separations, and it presents the work as it was meant to be seen.
